WoW Forever vs Classic: Is Forever Classic Plus?

WoW Forever is a separate permanent WoW experience, not a season or new Classic version. Compare its philosophy, world, leveling, and new content.

World of Warcraft: Forever is not officially named Classic Plus, and Blizzard says it is not a mode, a season, or a new version of Classic. Blizzard positions Forever as a third permanent World of Warcraft experience alongside modern and Classic WoW.

The reason players keep calling it "Classic+" is understandable: Forever starts from original Azeroth, keeps level 1–60 important, rejects flying and level scaling, and then adds new zones, quests, dungeons, raids, class updates, and systems that were never part of the original release.

The simplest difference

Classic preserves or revisits historical versions of World of Warcraft. Forever uses the original-world foundation as a place Blizzard intends to keep expanding.

Blizzard's own wording matters here. The What's Next panel says Forever is meant to last and will continue receiving new raids, dungeons, PvP updates, world content, quests, Hardcore, revamped content, and major updates over time.

Forever keeps several Classic-style principles

Blizzard has laid out four guiding pillars for Forever: familiarity, the world as the main character, the journey before the destination, and social experiences that keep Azeroth feeling alive.

In practical terms, Blizzard has already confirmed:

  • no flying mounts;
  • no level scaling;
  • leveling remains an important part of the game rather than a short path to endgame;
  • challenge, preparation, communication, and cooperation remain part of the intended experience;
  • rewards are tied to playing the world: leveling, dungeons, exploration, friendships, and group challenges.

Those choices explain why Forever appeals to players using the "Classic+" label even though Blizzard does not use it as the official product name.

What Forever adds beyond the original world

The launch roadmap is already much larger than a preservation-only experience. Blizzard has announced:

  • more than 1,000 new quests across the 1–60 journey;
  • new and reimagined areas including Zephras Isle, Riverglades, Mount Hyjal, and Shen'dralas;
  • the new playable Skyborne race;
  • nine new dungeons;
  • two announced raid locations, Barrow Deeps and Hyjal Summit;
  • new abilities, talent updates, and new race/class combinations;
  • Legacy progression and Camping;
  • opt-in Transmog, visual presets, HD/SD model options, restored Classic animations for HD models, and official gamepad support.

That is why a direct "Forever equals Classic Era with extra quests" description is too narrow.

Is Forever replacing Classic?

Blizzard's announcement describes Forever as a permanent home alongside modern and Classic WoW. Nothing in the current announcement says it replaces Classic.

The cleaner way to think about the lineup is:

ExperienceBlizzard's positioning
Modern WoWThe current modern World of Warcraft experience
Classic WoWBlizzard's Classic experiences
WoW ForeverA separate permanent, expanding version of original Azeroth

This page intentionally avoids inventing detailed feature-by-feature comparisons with every Classic ruleset because those rulesets can differ from one another. The comparison here is about what Blizzard has actually said Forever is.

Does Forever use the old world forever?

Forever begins in original Azeroth and is designed to keep expanding that version of the world. Blizzard says the Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor still contain unfinished spaces, old mysteries, forgotten ruins, and places that can become new adventures.

The first wave of new content turns that philosophy into actual zones, quest lines, dungeons, and raid locations rather than sending the game immediately to another continent or expansion-style reset.

What beta still needs to prove

The announcement tells us the design goals. Beta will tell us how they feel in practice.

We still need real data on class pacing, quest density, travel time, dungeon difficulty, talent choices, UI conveniences, Legacy progression, and how much Forever changes the moment-to-moment feel of original-era leveling.

That is why our Beta guide and Classes page separate confirmed design from preview impressions.

Naming note: "Classic+" is useful community shorthand, but this site uses World of Warcraft: Forever for the actual game and treats "Classic Plus" as a search term, not the official title.
