Controller Support

WoW Forever Controller & Steam Deck: Setup & Issues

Beta players report native controller support in WoW Forever. See Steam Deck setup, gamepad mode, current limitations, performance reports, and troubleshooting.

Beta players report that WoW Forever currently includes native controller support, and they are already using it with Xbox-style controllers, PlayStation controllers, Steam Deck, and other handheld setups. This is player-observed beta behavior rather than a Blizzard compatibility matrix, so this guide separates reproducible reports from current limitations.

Does WoW Forever support controllers?

Current beta reports say yes. Players describe a native gamepad interface with controller glyphs, menu navigation, targeting, looting, NPC interaction, and separate controller bindings from keyboard and mouse.

This is different from relying entirely on an addon such as ConsolePort. Community feedback says the native layer can handle many basic interactions out of the box, although customization is not yet as flexible.

How to enable controller mode

Current beta reports indicate that controller support must be enabled in the game settings. Some players found that the controller did not begin working correctly until the client was restarted after enabling the gamepad UI.

A safe setup sequence is:

  1. connect the controller before launching or before entering the character;
  2. enable the gamepad/controller UI in settings;
  3. restart the game if inputs are still ignored;
  4. verify movement, camera, targeting, interaction, and menu navigation before changing more bindings;
  5. test the same setup again after beta patches, because the controller UI is still evolving.

If a specific controller behaves incorrectly, test a standard Xbox-layout controller before assuming the whole gamepad system is broken.

Steam Deck support

Steam Deck is one of the most discussed controller use cases in the beta.

Players report that WoW Forever can run on Steam Deck through Battle.net and that the native controller UI recognizes many gamepad functions. Steam Input can add extra combinations through trackpads and back buttons.

However, performance varies substantially by area and player density. Reports from crowded starting zones include lower frame rates and heavier battery drain than older Classic clients. Treat those reports as beta observations rather than a launch performance target.

What works well right now

Frequently reported strengths include:

  • targeting and looting;
  • one-button NPC and object interaction;
  • controller glyphs in the UI;
  • D-pad menu navigation;
  • separate gamepad and keyboard layouts;
  • external controllers while docked;
  • Steam Input for extra bindings;
  • basic leveling and questing without constant mouse input.

Several players specifically describe the experience as much easier to start with than configuring a controller addon from scratch.

Current controller limitations

The most repeated complaints are not "controller does not exist" but customization and UI friction.

Current beta feedback includes:

  • limited remapping for some face buttons;
  • Edit Mode being difficult to manage only with a controller;
  • party or raid UI elements being too small;
  • some interactions still benefiting from a mouse or Steam Deck trackpad;
  • Steam Controller behavior being less reliable than standard Xbox-style controllers in some reports;
  • crowded areas causing performance issues unrelated to the controller itself.

These can change quickly during beta.

Steam Deck troubleshooting

If controller inputs are not recognized:

  • confirm gamepad mode is enabled;
  • restart the client after enabling it;
  • launch Battle.net through Steam if you need Steam Input;
  • check whether Steam Input is overriding the native layout;
  • test an external Xbox/PlayStation-style controller;
  • use the trackpad temporarily for UI elements that still require pointer input.

If performance is the problem rather than input detection, test away from highly populated starting zones before judging the device's normal frame rate.

Controller support vs ConsolePort

Native controller support and ConsolePort solve overlapping but not identical problems.

Native support currently offers easier initial setup and direct Blizzard UI integration. ConsolePort historically offers deeper customization for experienced controller players. During beta, compatibility and feature parity can change, so we are not declaring either approach universally better.

Will controller support come to other WoW versions?

Players are asking for it, but this page does not treat community requests as a Blizzard roadmap commitment. The confirmed scope here is WoW Forever beta.
