WoW Forever Macros: Class Templates & Troubleshooting

Set up WoW Forever macros for mouseover healing, crowd control, melee attacks and pets, with class examples, spell-name checks and clear testing limits.

Start with a small macro that solves one targeting or keybind problem—not a promised one-button rotation. These templates use familiar WoW macro syntax, but we have not tested them in the Forever release client. A published example is not confirmation that every spell, modifier or interaction works in your client build.

The commands below use English client spell names. An English, Spanish or Portuguese wiki page does not determine your game language: insert the spell from your own spellbook and preserve the command and condition syntax. Keep a normal spell button available while testing.

How to create and test a macro

  1. Enter /macro in chat. Create a character-specific macro when it is only for this character; use the general tab for a reusable template.
  2. Choose New, a name and an icon, then paste one small example.
  3. Replace the spell name with the exact spellbook entry in your client. Check that your character knows it.
  4. Drag the macro onto an action bar and bind a key. Start with a friendly target or a safe training target, away from other players' pulls.
  5. Compare the macro with the ordinary spell button. If the ordinary spell also fails, check range, line of sight, resources, form, equipment and spell availability before changing macro syntax.

The creation workflow is described in Blizzard's general macro introduction. It is an older general-WoW reference, not Forever-specific release testing.

Mouseover healing: understand the fallback

#showtooltip Renew
/cast [@mouseover,help,nodead][help,nodead][@player] Renew

This chooses a living friendly mouseover, otherwise a living friendly target, otherwise yourself. The first matching condition wins; this is not a retry sequence. If a valid mouseover is out of range or behind an obstacle, the failed cast does not automatically move on to your target. The self-cast fallback is deliberate: remove it if accidental self-healing is undesirable.

Use a learned heal appropriate to your class. The Priest example uses Renew, while Paladin, Shaman and Druid have separate notes. A macro does not remove cast times, resource costs or form restrictions.

Hostile mouseover without a self-cast fallback

#showtooltip Polymorph
/cast [@mouseover,harm,nodead][harm,nodead] Polymorph

A valid hostile mouseover takes priority over a valid hostile target. There is no self fallback. Check the target's eligibility, range and nearby damage before using crowd control; the macro cannot make an immune creature susceptible. See the Mage guide.

Melee attacks and stealth protection

A straightforward Warrior example:

#showtooltip Heroic Strike
/startattack [harm,nodead]
/cast [harm,nodead] Heroic Strike

Starting auto-attacks can be undesirable around crowd-controlled enemies. This does not check the tank's pull plan or automatically manage Rage. The Warrior guide explains the context.

For a Rogue who wants this button to do nothing while stealthed:

#showtooltip Sinister Strike
/startattack [nostealth,harm,nodead]
/cast [nostealth,harm,nodead] Sinister Strike

Both attack commands are guarded by nostealth. This is not an opener selector and does not protect you from a separate auto-attack keybind. See Rogue race choices and combat preparation.

Pet attack, with Alt to follow

/petattack [nomod:alt,pet,harm,nodead]
/petfollow [mod:alt,pet]

Without Alt, an existing pet is sent to your living hostile target. With Alt, the follow command is selected instead. Check whether another Alt keybind intercepts the button. The macro neither summons nor revives a pet and does not choose its stance or abilities. Read the Hunter or Warlock notes before using it near unwanted pulls.

When a macro does not work

SymptomFirst check
Nothing happensConfirm the spell works as a normal button and the macro is actually on the bound slot.
The wrong friendly target is selectedRead the conditions left to right; a valid mouseover wins. Remove the self fallback if unwanted.
A cast-time heal fails but an instant worksTest both ordinary spell buttons first, then test a minimal macro. Record the client build and input method rather than assuming a universal fix.
Alt does something elseInspect the competing action-bar or self-cast modifier binding before changing it.
It fails only in a form or with one weaponCheck that spell's form and equipment requirements. The macro does not bypass them.
Several spells do not execute togetherA macro does not bypass the global cooldown or automate a rotation. Split the actions into deliberate keypresses.

A September 30 Forever beta player report describes trouble with cast-time mouseover healing. That is a specific historical report, not proof of a current universal bug or a confirmed fix. Avoid blindly adding /stopcasting: it can interrupt a cast you wanted to finish.

These examples need no addon. For addon installation and settings backups, use Addons. For encounter preparation beyond a keybind, see Classes, Enchanting and Camping.
