Rogue Build

WoW Forever Rogue: Best Race & Combat Build Guide

Choose a WoW Forever Rogue race and Combat plan, compare early gear, enchants and PvP utility, and use practical macros with archived talent data.

The best Rogue race depends on your faction and whether you value PvP escape tools or PvE damage planning. There is no verified launch DPS winner here. Choose a compatible faction and ruleset with your group before comparing racials. The beta has ended; the level 20/30 builds below remain examples for fixed snapshot 1.60.1.69876, not a current cap or level-60 release build.

Best race for a Rogue: Alliance or Horde?

The official race/class matrix lists these Rogue choices:

FactionAvailable Rogue races
AllianceDwarf, Gnome, Human, Night Elf, Skyborne
HordeOrc, Troll, Undead, Skyborne

Tauren cannot be Rogues in the published matrix. Skyborne access has its own purchase requirement; paying for that race is not a recommendation or proof of better damage.

For PvP, our practical shortlist starts with the type of control you need to answer. These are utility comparisons, not a tournament ranking:

SituationRace worth comparingPublished tool
Stuns or stealth opponentsHumanWill to Survive and Perception
Roots and snaresGnomeEscape Artist
Bleeds, poisons or diseasesDwarfStoneform
Fear, charm or sleepUndeadWill of the Forsaken
Stun durationOrcHardiness

That shortlist does not make Night Elf, Troll or Skyborne invalid. Compare the full racial kit and your preferred appearance, not just one counter. Availability is official; the shortlist is our decision aid. Matchups, cooldown use and your group matter.

For PvE, do not import a Classic weapon-specialization ranking. The October 15 notes replaced the Human and Orc weapon-specific bonuses and changed Skyborne Haste. Use the dated racial comparison and current tooltips before comparing gear. A racial percentage is not a measured total-DPS advantage; this guide has no verified level-60 simulation to declare one race best.

If Rogue's role is still the question, compare it with other options in best class for your playstyle. Once race and faction are settled, use name reservation to check account eligibility and timing.

How to use the archived Combat builds

Combat offers a straightforward builder-and-finisher plan in the pinned dataset. Assassination focuses on poison and critical-strike interactions; Subtlety emphasizes stealth openers and control. The allocations below preserve their original 11/21-point budgets. Later racial or class notes do not silently update this snapshot, and the tables are not launch-meta recommendations.

Choose the activity before choosing gear

ActivityPractical decision
Solothe archived Combat plan is a builder-and-finisher example; match your weapon choice to the actual abilities.
Dungeoncontrol first, attack the agreed target and avoid cleaving a sapped or otherwise controlled enemy.
PvPuse stealth, escape and interrupts deliberately; race utility is discussed above, not reduced to a DPS score.

A Forever change worth checking

Blizzard's Rogue deep dive allows Poisons alongside temporary weapon enchantments and says Sap no longer breaks Stealth. That does not mean damage will preserve Sap. Check the weapon requirements of dagger-oriented abilities before replacing a sword with a dagger. Blizzard — class deep dive, announced mechanics.

Level 20 Combat build — 11 points

TalentRank
Improved Eviscerate3/3
Improved Sinister Strike2/2
Lightning Reflexes5/5
Endurance1/2

This spends exactly 11 points while improving the normal leveling builder, finisher and avoidance foundation.

Level 30 Combat extension — 21 points

Use the complete 21-point plan below:

TalentRank
Improved Eviscerate3/3
Improved Sinister Strike2/2
Lightning Reflexes5/5
Puncturing Wounds3/3
Precision3/3
Endurance2/2
Flawless Execution1/1
Dual Wield Specialization1/5
Blade Flurry1/1

Precision is fully ranked before Dual Wield Specialization because the fixed dataset lists it as a prerequisite. The allocation passes all row and prerequisite checks.

Combat priority

  1. Choose a safe opener; do not break stealth simply to begin faster.
  2. Use Sinister Strike as the dependable Combo Point builder for this plan.
  3. Maintain Slice and Dice when the target or chain of pulls will justify it.
  4. Use Eviscerate when immediate damage is more valuable than a longer buff.
  5. Save Kick, Gouge and stuns for dangerous casts or extra enemies.
  6. At the later cap, use Blade Flurry only when the second target is safe to damage.

Gear direction

Weapon quality and speed interactions matter more than chasing a generic armor score. Agility, Stamina and appropriate Hit/Critical Strike gear are useful, but poison availability and changes after the pinned snapshot can change the practical ranking of weapons.

Use the Talent Calculator to compare Combat with Assassination and Subtlety.

Early gear sources and alternatives

These are lookup examples from the 42-item loot snapshot, reviewed September 24, not new October item testing or a BiS ranking. That dataset does not contain full attributes, class restrictions or confirmed boss attribution. Inspect the actual tooltip, trained weapon type and role before rolling; two items in the same slot are not automatically interchangeable upgrades.

One-Hand DaggerMeathook Slicer — requires level 15Ruins of LordaeronFang of Magmatus — requires level 13
Chest LeatherBloodied Chestwraps — requires level 17Ruins of LordaeronNo second same-slot sample in this snapshot

If the tooltip is unsuitable, compare an already-owned quest or crafted item instead of farming a name on this list. No drop rate or guaranteed upgrade is promised.

Enchants and consumables for this role

Check main-hand and off-hand suitability separately instead of comparing only item level. Maintain the poison appropriate to the situation and confirm its availability before adding a temporary stone or enchant. Carry food, bandages and a usable healing potion; do not assume every temporary effect stacks just because poisons can coexist.

Use Enchanting for formulas, Merchant's Favor for vendor requirements and Camping for non-stacking class buffs. Check item level, slot restrictions and temporary-effect compatibility before paying.

A practical macro template

#showtooltip Sinister Strike
/startattack [nostealth,harm,nodead]
/cast [nostealth,harm,nodead] Sinister Strike

Both lines require a living hostile target and no Stealth. It will deliberately do nothing while stealthed, preserving the choice of opener. It cannot select a finisher or prevent you from breaking crowd control after attacking.

This is English-client syntax, not an in-game Forever test. Replace spell names with the exact names from your own spellbook. Use the macro setup and troubleshooting guide for binding, target checks and limitations.

Talent constraints are tied to fixed snapshot 1.60.1.69876; this page does not claim a solved damage meta.
