Mage Build

WoW Forever Mage Guide: Control, Gear, Builds & Macros

Prepare a WoW Forever Mage for solo, dungeon or PvP play with spell-control advice, early gear sources, recovery and macros, plus archived talent plans.

Snapshot boundary: The beta is closed. The level-20/30 talent tables below are archived examples for fixed build 1.60.1.69876, not current level caps or verified level-60 builds. Role choices are editorial guidance; announced class mechanics have their own source.

Frost is the safest general Mage leveling path because slowing, rooting and creating distance make individual Classic-paced pulls more controllable. Fire is the burst and critical-strike alternative; Arcane offers mana and utility choices plus the new Arcane Blast path.

Choose the activity before choosing gear

ActivityPractical decision
SoloFrost is the archived control-focused example; choose pulls you can manage rather than assuming an AoE farm is safe.
Dungeonprotect crowd control, watch threat and use the right spell for the target, not a fixed damage script.
PvPpreserve distance and escape options; rooting or Polymorphing is a decision, not an automatic step in every pull.

A Forever change worth checking

Blizzard describes Comprehension as a Mage-specific scroll profession and changes Fire talents to support cross-school interactions. Old Classic raid gearing or AoE-farming routes are not automatically valid Forever recommendations. Blizzard — class deep dive, announced mechanics.

Level 20 Frost build — 11 points

TalentRank
Improved Frostbolt5/5
Elemental Precision5/5
Ice Lance1/1

This improves the primary cast, spell reliability and movement follow-up while spending exactly 11 points.

Level 30 Frost extension — 21 points

Keep the level-20 points, then add:

TalentAdded rank
Ice Shards5/5
Piercing Ice3/3
Frost Channeling1/3
Cold Snap1/1

The extension is valid under the fixed row and prerequisite rules. It leaves room for different level-30 choices if group content makes Improved Blizzard or other control more valuable.

Combat priority

  1. Open at range with Frostbolt and use the slow to preserve distance.
  2. Use Frost Nova when an enemy reaches you, then move before casting again.
  3. Use Ice Lance while movement or a frozen target makes it worthwhile.
  4. Finish with a wand when doing so saves enough mana to avoid a full drink.
  5. In dungeons, use Polymorph and controlled area damage; do not break crowd control for a larger meter number.

Gear direction

Intellect, Spirit, Stamina and spell damage are useful leveling directions. Blizzard says caster weapons now grant spell damage and healing, making weapon upgrades meaningful for spellcasters. Exact Frost stat weights are not treated as solved while spell ranks and beta tuning remain in motion.

Use the Talent Calculator to compare Frost, Fire and Arcane.

Early gear sources and alternatives

These are lookup examples from the 42-item loot snapshot, reviewed September 24, not new October item testing or a BiS ranking. That dataset does not contain full attributes, class restrictions or confirmed boss attribution. Inspect the actual tooltip, trained weapon type and role before rolling; two items in the same slot are not automatically interchangeable upgrades.

Two-Hand StaffColdspire Staff — requires level 19Ruins of LordaeronGolemheart Stave — requires level 13
Chest ClothRobe of Evocation — requires level 13Ragefire ChasmRobes of the Disgraced Thane — requires level 13
Wrist ClothCrystalline Cuffs — requires level 13Ragefire ChasmAetherwisp Bracers — requires level 13

If the tooltip is unsuitable, compare an already-owned quest or crafted item instead of farming a name on this list. No drop rate or guaranteed upgrade is promised.

Enchants and consumables for this role

Compare spell damage and useful school restrictions as well as Intellect, Spirit and survival. Inspect the weapon's spell effects instead of judging by melee DPS. Take water, food and usable mana/healing potions; price a caster enchant against the item's remaining leveling life.

Use Enchanting for formulas, Merchant's Favor for vendor requirements and Camping for non-stacking class buffs. Check item level, slot restrictions and temporary-effect compatibility before paying.

A practical macro template

#showtooltip Polymorph
/cast [@mouseover,harm,nodead][harm,nodead] Polymorph

This attempts Polymorph on a living hostile mouseover, otherwise your living hostile target. It does nothing without a valid hostile target, but can still replace the wrong control target; check the tank's mark and avoid damaging the controlled enemy.

This is English-client syntax, not an in-game Forever test. Replace spell names with the exact names from your own spellbook. Use the macro setup and troubleshooting guide for binding, target checks and limitations.

Data note and sources

The talent plan is tied to fixed snapshot 1.60.1.69876; it is not a live damage simulation.
