WoW Forever Beginner Guide: Your First Session
A practical WoW Forever beginner guide for beta access, rulesets, class choice, early quests, level-10 talents, and your first dungeon run.
New to WoW Forever? Start by choosing a ruleset and a class you want to play, then follow your starting-zone quests until you are ready for one of the two early dungeons. This guide is a first-session checklist, not a speed-leveling route. The current beta begins with a level-20 cap; Blizzard says it will rise to 30 later.
1. Check access and install the beta
Blizzard is inviting selected opt-in accounts during the test. Eligible Skyborne Epic Pack and Warcraft Forever Collection purchases also grant beta access. In Battle.net, select World of Warcraft, open the Game Version menu, choose World of Warcraft: Forever Beta under In Development, and install it. A newly eligible account may need up to 30 minutes and a launcher restart before the option appears.
If the beta version still does not appear, follow the official access steps in our beta guide before treating it as a server outage. The editions guide separates the subscription from optional upgrade packs.
2. Choose a ruleset you can keep playing
Forever uses rulesets rather than a traditional realm-selection list. Normal is the straightforward choice for exploration and group play. PvP adds open-world conflict in contested areas. Roleplaying is for players who want to play within the setting with like-minded adventurers. Hardcore is planned after launch, so it is not an opening-beta choice.
Choose with friends before creating characters: Blizzard says characters in different rulesets cannot group for dungeons or raids, and Horde and Alliance characters cannot group together. The servers and rulesets guide explains transfers, language preference and other restrictions.
3. Pick a class by what you enjoy doing
For a forgiving first solo character, Hunter or Warlock are sensible starting points because a pet can help manage ordinary outdoor fights. If you want to learn tanking, consider Warrior or Paladin. For healing, Priest is the clearest dedicated option; Druid is useful if you have not settled on one role. These are playstyle recommendations, not a final beta DPS ranking.
Check the best-class chooser for the trade-offs and race/class combinations before creating a character. Skyborne have a separate level 1–12 starting area on Zephras Isle and require an eligible upgrade pack; other races begin in their own starting areas.
4. Use your first session to learn the world
- Follow the local opening quest chain. It introduces nearby hubs and keeps travel manageable. Do not copy a Skyborne route if you started as another race.
- Train abilities you will use. Check the trainer when you reach a new hub and keep some coin available for training.
- Read the enemy and quest objective before pulling. Forever is designed around more deliberate combat, and a nearby extra enemy can change the fight.
- Group when a quest area is crowded or dangerous. You can make progress together and learn how your class supports others.
- At level 10, review your talents. Start with the class guides or use the talent calculator as a versioned planning tool; the beta can change talent data.
- Try professions and Camping when you encounter them. The professions and Camping guide explains what Blizzard has confirmed without assuming every recipe is final.
If you chose a Skyborne character, the Zephras Isle route now leads you through Thendal and Shen'dar. In Shen'dar, The Great Outdoors introduces Camping and The Problem With Prideclaws awards a recorded six-slot bag. These quest details come from beta records and can change.
There is no need to rush to level 20 in one sitting. The beta leveling guide covers level brackets, dungeon windows and preparation for the later cap increase.
5. Plan your first dungeon rather than entering empty-handed
The opening beta includes Hall of Thanes at levels 13–18 and Ruins of Lordaeron at levels 15–20. Both are five-player group activities. Check the guide for your dungeon before traveling: Hall of Thanes has a reported Dun Morogh prerequisite chain, while Ruins of Lordaeron has several reported Horde quests to collect outside the instance.
| Ready for… | Read before entering |
|---|---|
| Your first lower-level group run beneath Ironforge | Hall of Thanes entrance and quest checklist |
| A run through the ruined capital near Undercity | Ruins of Lordaeron quest pickups and boss route |
Bring a complete group, agree on roles, and leave room to recover between difficult pulls. The dungeon overview compares all nine announced instances; only the first two are part of the opening level-20 test.
When something does not work
Beta features and servers can change during testing. Check the known-issues page for reported problems and the build tracker for the latest recorded client update. A player report may describe a different build, so use its date before following a workaround.
Beta note, September 23: Rulesets, access routes, the initial level cap and the two opening dungeons come from Blizzard. Class suggestions and first-session steps are editorial guidance; dungeon entrances and quest pickups are marked as player reports on their own pages.
